the WHITE HEART :: Symbol of Nursing by Rosabella
Blog URL:http://www.nursecorner.com/blogs/whiteheart Posts:1
I see that Helen had kept the white heart symbol of nursing aatched to her blog "Why am I nurse?"

The white heart was officially launched as a universal symbol for nursing in 1999, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the International Council of Nurses. The symbol is meant to characterize the caring, knowledge and humanity that infuse the work and spirit of nursing. The white heart is also a unifying symbol for nurses globally.

White was selected because it brings together all colours, demonstrating nursing's acceptance of all people. White also has a world-wide association with nursing, caring, hygiene and comfort. The heart shape communicates humanity and the central place that nursing has in quality health care.

WHY AM I A NURSE ? by Helen
Blog URL:http://www.nursecorner.com/blogs/helenmyself Posts:1
To be or not to be. That was the dilemma as my mother and I stood before the college admission window contemplating my future. I remember my mamang telling me about a majority of my cousins venturing into health care and most of them have gone to the great US of A for greener pastures, for comfortable living and for the green dollars. When I was a child, an old Chinese friend once did a palm reading on me. I used to think that he was quite fond of me and he looked at me and told me that i will do good in commerce. My old friend is long gone now but I remember him with fondness and of that particular day. As it turned out, I didn't want to disappoint my mother who wanted the best for her daughter. And there, the decision was taken. With a heavy heart, I said 'YES'. I will do nursing and remembered again my old friend feeling sorry that i had to disappoint his prophecy. My elder sister was already into her second year of nursing and as a matter of routine, I always had seconds handed down to me. And so my books and uniforms were all seconds from my sister. I had no complainst. I never complained. That was the most practical thing as my three other brothers were all in school yet.

Enrtry to the nursing school wasn't easy. There was an IQ test for all applicants, nursing being a tough course, and therefore only suited for the best. Luckily, i scored well and was in top 5 . So, it was smooth entry and beginning into the world of nursing. The first three months was basically theoretical. We had to learn the basics of nursing and practiced all thse procedures we were supposed to perform with the patients. Then the big day for all of us..the Capping Ceremony..the most coveted nursing cap. I topped the class and was honored and the next day, the real nursing job began. Sheduling between hospital duties, researches , family visits and classes..i didnt feel much strain because I began to love and enjoy what I was doing. So much so that social life became synomymous with the smell of a hospital. The years dragged by and I graduated with honors, took the board exams and passed.

I am a nurse today, proud of my achievements and my contributions to all those people i nursed and cared for.

Material rewards for 'nursing' is nothing compared to the feeling of spiritual upliftment I experienced everytime I see happy smiles on all those faces, who, were contorted in pains.

To be or not to be? I found the answer. Ultimately.

IS TELEVISION NECESSARY? by GE Nordell, author and revolutionary
Blog URL:http://www.nursecorner.com/blogs/tv Posts:1
Surveys give differing statistics on the amount of time that we spend watching the tube. The consensus is that the average American adult watches six to eight hours daily. How? Breakfast news shows and daytime soaps and midday talk shows, thru prime time to the "Late Show Tonight". And don't forget the weekends.
Cocaine is said to be Nature's way of telling you that you have too much money; television is Nature's way of telling you that you have too much empty time on your hands.
At 56 years of age, it is an accomplishment to be able to say that I have never owned a television set. Nor do I feel deprived. There are so many books; there are so many activities that require intellectual participation. There is so much to do.
As a writer, I naturally observe the ebb and flow of cultural 'tube speak' and witness the insidious influence of television in society, yet I am not required to succumb. The print media keep me well-informed about the current TV season: the shows, the personalities, the scandals and petty feuds, the drivel. It is difficult to remember any recent conversation that did not include multiple references, TV-derived buzz words, or sound-bite quotations, all automatically ingrained in the TV addict's speech.
Yes, addict. The TV addict's behavior is entirely automatic and unthinking. The couch potato ignores one-on-one interaction with family and friends in favor of passively basking in the artificial shenanigans on the sitcoms and voyeuristic intrusion into the private lives of strangers, and mindlessly parrots the televised opinions of pundits who cannot parse a sentence. Thinking is a lost skill.
Am I being harsh? Not even! Civilization trundles off to hell in a hand-basket while John Tesh and Geraldo Rivera and Pamela Anderson Lee make millions, and Puritan voyeurs watch 'Survivor Island'. The ancient Roman curse of 'bread and circuses' has been replaced in modern America and our cultural satellites by 'fast food and cable', as this once-generative culture devolves into fear-driven lemmings hiding behind barred doors & windows and security alarms, mesmerized by the flickering images on the tube. An entire country mesmerized and asleep at the wheel.
You say that television is necessary? Not addictive? And certainly not in your case? Well, here we get to the proof of the matter: If TV is not addictive, then you will be able to cease your consumption. So here's the bet: Your addiction will prevent you from unplugging every TV set in your home for two weeks time. The addict cannot do this.
Resist the temptation to act the automaton, stand alone as a sentient being, cut the cord and meet the people in your life face-to-face for a change. Watch the sunset, play cribbage or toss a ball with the kids, clean the garage or the attic, renew your marriage.
The strong, the awake, the still-alive will stash the devices of unconsciousness in the garage or attic permanently and stand up for real life. No 12-step program is required, just unplug the idiot machines. Remember: Garbage in, garbage out.
Reject the cultural addiction to the vast wasteland, the great time-waster. You have only one life to live, so live it! It might even be fun participating in your own life.
